California Insurance Proof Certificate
Generally speaking, a policy is referred to as SR22 insurance when an SR22 Form needs to be submitted. Your insurance company has to submit this form to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), if you are required to show a proof of financial responsibility. Note that a copy of your insurance or your insurance card can not replace an SR22 form and will not be accepted by the DMV as a sufficient proof.
In California the minimum insurance requirements are:
* $15,000 for injury/death to one person
* $30,000 for injury/death to more than one person
* $5,000 for damage to property
Who is SR22 insurance for?
There are two main reasons why you may be obliged to file a SR22 form. DUI, driving under the influence is probably the most common reason. The second is for being involved in an accident while driving uninsured.Both reasons will mean that your driving license will be suspended. The car insurance law in California is very tough. You will have to participate in a DUI program, but the worse part is that DUI conviction may even mean going to jail. One year without a license is the punishment for driving uninsured.
What is the SR22 filling period?
The period, during which maintaining a proof of financial responsibility is required, is three years. In order to reinstate your drivers license, you will be required to pay additional fees. During this period you will consider you to be a "high-risk" driver.Your insurance company is also required to submit a SR26 form the DMV if you cancel your auto insurance or your filling period expires. If you let your insurance lapse during these 3 years and SR26 form is submitted, your license will be suspended by the DMV.
It is important to know that SR22 is state specific and California SR22 insurance is valid only for California. If you move to another state, you will have to obtain another policy.
The reality of the situation is that SR22 means higher insurance premiums. Shopping around for the cheapest option is your only choice.

My cousin Nick was driving with no insurance
My brother Rick was driving uninsured. I should have never giving him the car.
How often is it that cops check if you have insurance? Not very often, right?.
Of course he will be fined but there is more. Now he needs SR22 to get insured. I'm not really sure what that is really. Found some articles SR22 Form, SR22 Insurance and SR22 - what is it?.
He may even go to jail if he does it again. I didn't know that the penalties for driving uninsured were that hars.
May be he should be happy he wasn't in a accident Can only imagine what would have happened if he had been drunk as well
I still can't believe he did such an idiotic thing. Definitely the last time I'm giving him my car
